Commission and Committee Descriptions

Planning Commission

DESCRIPTION: The California Government Code Section 65100 et seq. and Indian Wells Municipal Code Title 2.12, entitled City Planning Agency serve as the bases for the formation of the Planning Commission. The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council in:

  • Preparing and recommending such specific plans as may be necessary or desirable to carry out the objectives of the General Plan;
  • Administering the State Subdivision Map Act and the California Environmental Quality Act;
  • Reviewing all zoning (except interim zoning), conditional use, and variance applications and making recommendations with regard to the same to the City Council;
  • Reviewing and approving sign matters as specified by the Code; and
  • Performing such other functions, duties, and responsibilities as may be specifically provided for in the Code of the State of California and the Code of the City of Indian Wells; and such other duties and functions as may specifically be requested by the City Council.

MEMBERSHIP: The Planning Commission consists of five (5) resident voting members. The resident members serve staggered two year terms commencing on July 1.

QUALIFICATIONS: Residents must be registered Indian Wells voters and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Planning Commission.

MEETING DATE: Meets on the last Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m.

 

Architecture and Landscape Committee

DESCRIPTION: The Indian Wells Municipal Code Title 21.60, entitled Architecture and Landscape Review, provides the review process to ensure that the general appearance of structures and other constructed and erected objects are compatible with the existing development and to ensure harmony between structures and landscaping. The Architectural Landscape Committee [ALC] conducts this review process.

MEMBERSHIP: The ALC Committee consists of five (5) voting members and one (1) non-voting member. Voting members shall consist of five (5) residents, and the non-voting member shall be one (1) representative from the City's Planning Commission.

ALC voting members shall be appointed by the City Council on July 1st of each year and shall serve staggered two-year terms. The ALC non-voting member shall be appointed by the Planning Commission each year and shall serve a one-year term commencing on July 1st of each year.

QUALIFICATIONS: Resident members must be registered Indian Wells voters and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Architecture and Landscape Committee.

MEETING DATES: Meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 9:00 a.m.

 

Community Activities Committee

DESCRIPTION: The Committee advises and makes recommendations to the City Council regarding an overall plan for encouraging and fostering community interaction among residents, including a proposed annual calendar for community activities, as well as assisting with the planning and implementation of such events.

MEMBERSHIP: The Committee consists of seven (7) members with voting authority: two (2) City Council Members and five (5) residents. The resident members serve staggered two (2) year terms commencing on July 1.

QUALIFICATIONS: Resident members must be registered Indian Wells voters and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Community Activities Committee.

MEETING DATES: Meets on the second Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m. The Committee may hold additional meetings or study sessions as required.

 

Golf Course Committee

DESCRIPTION: The Committee advises and makes recommendations to the City Council on issues pertaining to the Golf Resort at Indian Wells. The Committees primary responsibilities are to make recommendations to the City Council on golf resort improvements, marketing, fiscal procedures and capital projects.

MEMBERSHIP: The Golf Course Committee shall consist of nine (9) members with voting authority: two City Council Members, the general managers from the Hyatt Grand Champions, Indian Wells Resort Hotel, Miramonte Resort, Renaissance Esmeralda Resort, and the Golf Resort at Indian Wells, and two residents.

QUALIFICATIONS: Residents must be registered Indian Wells voters and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Golf Course Committee.

MEETING DATES: Meets on an as needed basis.

 

Grants in Aid Committee

DESCRIPTION: The Committee advises and makes recommendations to the City Council regarding the distribution of public funds to worthy charities, community organizations and schools throughout the Coachella Valley under the Citys Community Assistance Program and the School Grant Program. The Committee members also act as direct liaisons to organizations, making on-site visits to learn in detail about their operations.

MEMBERSHIP: The Grants-in-Aid Committee consists of seven members with voting authority: two (2) City Council Members and five (5) resident members. The resident members serve staggered two year terms commencing on July 1.

QUALIFICATIONS: Residents must be registered Indian Wells voters and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Grants-in-Aid Committee.

MEETING DATES: Meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m.

 

Palm Springs Regional Airport Commission

DESCRIPTION: The Airport Commission is comprised of seventeen members representing each city in the Coachella Valley and the private sector. The Airport Commission advises the Palm Springs City Council on various matters related to the airport including acquisition, development, financing and lease arrangements, present and future airport operations, and budget.

QUALIFICATIONS: The resident selected to serve on the Airport Commission must be a registered Indian Wells voter and must maintain residency within the City of Indian Wells for the duration of their term to serve on the Airport Commission.

MEETING DATES: Meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. Meetings are held on the second floor of the terminal building.
